Animals Should Be Tough

There’s no getting around the fact that “mundane” beasts are (should be) difficult adversaries for folk, capable of killing or running off a party of adventurers.

Has anyone put together a list of mundane beasts, such as bears, boar, wolves, lions, and mountain lions? If so, would you be willing to post the info?

Agree. Give me some time and I’ll propose some cool beasties.

Stay cool

Here’s one I just used in a game:

Rock Snake
The rock snake grows to a length of ten feet and lives among tumbled rocks, scrubland or grassy desert. It has a mottled gray-brown pattern on its back and sports a dangerously venomous bite. It is fast-moving but prefers to employ its camouflage for both offense and defense when possible. It has a Might score of 1 despite its large size because it has powerful weapons but is primarily a threat to unprepared or careless adventurers.

Descriptors: Vicious, Swift, Slippery
Might: 1
Nature: 4

Conflicts:

Drive Off - Disposition 5 (7 if hungry)
Venomous Fangs +1D Attack
Lithe Coils +1D Maneuver or Feint

Flee - Disposition 8
Cunning Motion +2D Maneuver
Camouflage +1D Feint

Capture - Disposition 10
Venomous Fangs +1D Attack
Camouflage Pattern +2D Defense

Kill - Disposition 6
Venomous Fangs +1D Attack
Lithe Coils +1D Maneuver, +1D Feint

Hmmmm…this sounds familiar…Lithe Coils, you say…Venomous Fangs, you say…

Also, Unprepared and Careless seems a little harsh…

Haha I mean in terms of deadly danger. Anything can hurt adventurers

Keep in mind that the descriptors should be active words (usually -ing words). How does one ‘vicious’? How does one ‘swift’? A descriptor like ‘Striking’ tells you that snakes love to bite things, any biting action is in their nature. ‘Ambushing’ could also be good. Escaping, Pursuing, Slithering, Waiting… more ideas.

House cats should get a bonus to killing wizards.

Nature Descriptors should be: Moving swiftly, biting, slipping bonds…or something. They’re not traits.

The only descriptors that snake has now are Twitching Lifelessly, Spurting Black Blood, and Rotting.

Am I right?! Ay-O!

Gotcha, thanks for the feedback on the Nature descriptors. Natures are one area that is still a steep portion of the learning curve for me.
