Gray Shade Steel and Exponents

Hello.
I have the Gold edition of Burning Wheel and on page 91 for Steel it says:

“Base starting Steel is B3. Players should answer the following questions regarding their character’s history. Each answer can raise or lower Steel. Also, five “yes” answers can be used to buy a gray shade.”

Does that mean that I get the gray shade AND the increases/decreases to the exponent? So could I (in theory) have a Steel of G8 at character creation, or do I only get EITHER the gray shade OR the exponent modifications?
Thank you for your help in advance.

Edit: Punctuation.

You can lower your steel by five points to exchange it for a gray shade. If you build it right you can get up to g8 in character burning though, and make a real interesting mother soldier sorcerer
