This seems like such a basic thing that I should be able to find an answer in the Codex, but I can’t, so here goes – How does range work in Art Magic?
My instincts tell me that affecting a distant target ought to be harder than affecting one you can touch, but the Codex doesn’t appear to mention range at all.
Did I miss something?
Destroy with Sorcerous Fire has longest/hunting bow range and Sorcerous Weapon is ranged like whatever weapon the spell approximates.
Other than that you haven’t missed anything! Range doesn’t raise casting Obs, just breadth and duration.
However, the GM can always set situational dis/advantages. You should also consider the idiom of magic in your game; Is it shooting streaks of light out of your wiggling fingers? Is it carefully enunciated incantations in the language of demons? Is it merely the sorcerer’s force of will and ability to imagine things?
With those two things in mind, if you have finger-rockets magic and someone wants to cast a spell on someone a mile away on a hazy day, the GM should probably assess a disadvantage.
I personally like sorcerers who can hit you with a spell if they know your name or have a lock of your hair or can see you in a scrying pool. Or if they can just make you out as a speck on the horizon. It’s like a space battle!
Thank you for that thoughtful and helpful response Chloe.
