Selling unvaluable loot

Hi!

There`s a player in the group who got a child’s doll as loot on the stuff subtable. Is it by design that it has no value or can he try to sell it in town somehow? If so, how should we go about it? Will it be the same for any unvaluable loot?

thank you!

Hello

In 1st edition, it is found on p. 90

2e it is on SG p 105

The line says it all: “No one wants your junk.”

The adventurers are not meant to sell all the various odds and ends. Those things are much better utilized to overcome obstacles. For example, throwing the doll head as a supply bonus in a test to create a distraction or an improvised weapon in Flee conflict.

But if we zoom out for a second, there are a lot of other reasons for this.

  1. Graverobbing is bad luck and not encouraged by civilized folk who want to avoid curses
  2. There isn’t a market demand for these things
  3. The game has a very strict loot cycle. You don’t even get the salvage from fallen foes like in other games. Players are not directly rewarded for killing things and taking their stuff (however, stealing from them is OK!).

In 2e, there is something called Value X items, which are story items that can be sold through some leg work.

The doll might be a nice gift for a child if a family puts you up in their home. Or who knows? Maybe a troll or disturbed spirit might be moved by it? You never know unless you try. A chew toy for a dog or wolf?

Also, note there are Haggling results that allow you to get cash for otherwise worthless junk. I don’t have a 1e book on hand, but here’s the result on the Successful Market Haggling Table in 2e:

  • Honest face. Take +1D extra cash for one piece of kit or salvage traded in (even if rated Ob 1-3).

Cut the stuffing out and use it as supploes for starting a fire or making a pillow (gear for recovering from Exhaustion). Maybe it has button eyes you can use as supplies for repairing clothes.

Other items might seem valuable to someone but less so at market. I might Find Someone willing to buy such an item (for more than market would offer).
