Spending Checks for Conflicts in the Players' Turn

Please forgive me if this has already been answered, but I have not been able to find the answer:

p. 75 states that it costs one check to start a conflict during the Players’ Turn. Does this mean that an entire conflict costs only one check for the initiator, or does it cost one check to start plus any spent on the tests performed during a conflict (such as the vs., ob 0’s, etc.?)?

The closing statement “Your victim or target does not have to spend anything to fight back” seems to indicate to me that an entire conflict comes at a cost of one check to the conflict’s instigator, regardless of the number of tests rolled during the conflict.

Just like it says, one check for the whole conflict.

It might be a little clearer if one sees it as one important turn of the story costs one check. How that turn of the story is resolved doesn’t matter.
