When a mage is spell casting they test both their sorcery skill vs. spell obstacle for success and their forte vs the same obstacle for tax. I have always logged each one as a seperate test as you are testing two different items within the same action and each has its own consequence for failure.

That is the part that I enjoy about mages in my games is that they have double the tests to do the same thing, it also means that it is twice as likely they are going to mess something up and all hell is going to break loose. which is the real fun part.
