Torchbearer Resources

I’ve been cobbling together as many rules as I can to play the game, and this is what I’ve come up with so far. Note, a huge portion of this comes from Clinton’s post here: http://www.burningwheel.org/forum/showthread.php?13298-Notes-for-running-Torchbearer-with-the-preview-and-MG

  1. A reminder to start play with. Torchbearer is a game about exploration and survival. Your characters may become heroes, or they may die in a pit trap. It’s the GMs job to poke them in their beliefs and in their soft flesh to try and make one of those outcomes true.

  2. Spells descriptions via Clinton (i.e. not the official version) can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gorjuh-AAhJRMaqbkJzhd3VIukzVmtyXirj99FWkGzU/pub

  3. Weapons we should stat out as they are Mouse Guard (except the shield) whenever possible. Weapons are listed on the 2nd page of the Mouse Guard character sheet (as well as rules for most conflicts, except the skills may be different). Here’s a copy: http://www.burningwheel.org/wiki/images/a/ad/MGFillableSheet.pdf. If you’re barehanded (based on Thor’s write up of the ogre) you suffer -1D to all actions.

  4. Also from Clinton’s list, but supported by bits I’ve seen from Thor. Every dungeon challenge will be in the form of one of these. In Mouse Guard these were: weather, wilderness, animals, and mice. In Torchbearer they are:

Terrain: The dungeon is narrow, slippery, sharp, or dangerous in some other way.
Environment: The environment is hostile to humanoid life. It’s freezing, burning, poisonous, or otherwise harmful.
Denizens: The dungeon has creatures that live in it and they are not friendly.
Traps: The dungeon has natural or created traps.

  1. Every time you enter an area, according to Clinton and Jared Sorensen, it takes a turn. Each test takes up a turn, unless that test was triggered by an instinct. According to Thor on the Misdirected Mark podcast, if you have a “good idea”, you automatically pass the test and it does not take a turn. Starting at 46:34

  2. Every four turns you gain a condition. Light is last a few turns (Torch: 2, Lantern: 3, Candle: 4), and only cover so many people (Candle: 1, Torch: 2, Lantern: 3). This is from Clinton’s doc as well as snippets I’ve heard from Thor and Luke.

  3. There are several monsters that have been stated out in Cliton’s doc and on the Monstrous Compendium Forums

  4. Camp events are rolled randomly at the start of camp. There are different tables for safe places vs. dangerous places to make camp. Luke talks about this on the Misdirected Mark podcast starting at 43:50. There is a decent chance that your camp will be interrupted and you’ll lose your checks. Clinton has a list of random events in his doc as well.

  5. Town Phase has it’s own events. Not sure what to do with it yet, but there are going to be some events happening every time you arrive. Town is it’s own mini game. Luke talks about this on the Misdirected Mark podcast starting at 44:52.

  6. As the PDF released states, most every thing else should be playable from the Mouse Guard rules.

That’s what I’ve got so far, I’ll try to add to it as I find other resources.

And the moral of this story is… you know what? Screw morals, I’m downloading and listening to Misdirected Mark right now!

Best regards, Burning Heralds!
