[bowing & scraping] It is my pleasure to trouble myself about such mundane matters, O warlike prince, so that Your Grace may focus on those men of might who are most worthy of His attention. [/bowing and scraping]
I expect you to earn those heavilly forested estates on DC Prime, Baron. Now go get me a cup of coffee.

Sydney,
Awesome info on battalions! Thanks to Chris for letting you pass this along. I’m gonna have some dead time tomorrow AM and while I should be working on my manuscript (my editor twisted end of the year into 15 Oct), I’ll probably play around with these different types of battalions, thinking “if I was the battalion commander.”
What?! I thought everything Chris said was gospel. Guess I’ll have to take down my CMoeller shrine.
Ah, you’re failing to distinguish between hadith and sura… Published Chris Moeller material = canon. Chris’s notes that he chooses to share with us and his musings on the boards = sub-canonical because he can change 'em whenever he damn well pleases.
Over in a related thread, I posted something about Iron, but I realize I managed to misread my own spreadsheet about how many Lords-Pilot in Iron are in a given size unit, so let me post a corrected table in this thread, where it follows closely on what Lance has been talking about:
Anvil Lord’s Anvil Affiliation - Amount of Iron - % of Anvil Lords in this class
1D Affiliation - one Iron squad (4-5 Lords-Pilot) - 25% of Anvil Lords
2D Affiliation - one Iron platoon (19-20 Lords-Pilot) - 50% of Anvil Lords
3D Affiliation - one or more Iron companies (60+ Lords-Pilot) - 25% of Anvil Lords
Note that this is talking about Anvil Lords. Presumably Forged Lords concentrate on the upper end of this spectrum, with most of them in the “company-plus” category.
Chris, does this breakdown feel about right to you?
Reeaalllyy? [insert sly/evil Calvin look] Then I’ve got to get that “All I know about Anvil I learned from Faith Conquers” project done!
Cheers
Yes! This makes sense to me in view of the IE universe, gives it a more of 100 Years War in Space in feeling.
Anvil Lords would have some Iron and would always be scheming to get more Lord-Pilots to swear allegiance to them. That takes resources and prestige. I can see the scenes already.
Those numbers feel right to me, Syd. Cool to see it in spelled out so specifically.
Chris
Way more down time than expected today (sometimes the Check Engine light really means something!) so I’m taking a crack at Chris’ Battalion classes posted back a bit. “In quotes” is Chris, italicized is me.
“Battalion classes: Iron, Anvil, Infantry, Armored, Cavalry, Mechanized, Marine, Artillery, Assault, Air Superiority, Security, Combat Engineer, Irregular (all can be made grav-mobile)”

Security Platoon
Plus Iron Detachment (see below)[/i]
“Iron: Designed as an elite line unit. Primarily heavy infantry platoons equipped with Iron. Extremely expensive to maintain and field.”
Battalions only at the Royal or Guard Anvil level, other battalions will have a detachment:
1D: Iron Squad

2D: 6 Light Infantry Companies, Cavalry Platoon, Armored Platoon, Artillery Platoon, Combat Engineer Platoon, Security Platoon, Iron Platoon
3D: 9 Light Infantry Companies, 2 Cavalry Platoon, 2 Armored Platoon, 2 Artillery Platoon, 2 Combat Engineer Platoon, 2 Security Platoon, Iron Platoon.
“Armored: Rare to find dedicated Armored Battalions. Some wealthy lords field fully armored battalions, but usually Battalions will field a number of Armored platoons to support their line companies.”
1D: 3 Armored Companies, Cavalry Platoon, Anvil Infantry Platoon, Artillery Platoon, Combat Engineer Platoon, Security Platoon, Iron Squad
2D: 6 Armored Companies, 2 Cavalry Platoon, 2 Anvil Infantry Platoon, 2 Artillery Platoon, 2 Combat Engineer Platoon, 2 Security Platoon, Iron Platoon
3D: 9 Armored Companies, Cavalry Company, Anvil Infantry Company, Artillery Company, Combat Engineer Company, Security Company, Iron Company.

3D: 9 Cavalry Companies, Armored Company, Anvil Infantry Company, Artillery Company, Combat Engineer Company, Security Company, Iron Company.
“Mechanized: Heavier armored units with a strong infantry component. Combined arms with emphasis on hitting power and total mechanization/grav mobility. A greater proportion of armor and artillery than a Cavalry or simple Grav-Mobile Battalion”
1D: 1 Anvil Infantry Company, 1 Armored Company, 1 Artillery Battery, 1 Cavalry Company, 1 Combat Engineer Platoon, 1 Security Platoon, Iron Squad
2D: 2 Anvil Infantry Company, 2 Armored Company, 2 Artillery Battery, 2 Cavalry Company, 2 Combat Engineer Platoons, 2 Security Platoon, Iron Platoon
3D: 3 Anvil Infantry Company, 3 Armored Company, 3 Artillery Battery, 3 Cavalry Company, 1 Combat Engineer Company, 1 Security Company, Iron Company
“Marine: only fielded by Forged Lords at Battalion strength. Usually Hammer Lords field their own organic security and boarding troops.”
1D: 3 Anvil Infantry Companies, 1 Iron Squad (limited grav lift)
2D: 6 Anvil Infantry Companies, 1 Iron Platoon (limited grav lift)
3D: 9 Anvil Infantry Companies, 1 Iron Company (limited grav lift)
"Artillery: Rare to find dedicated artillery battalions. Usually battalions will field a number of Artillery platoons to support their line companies.
Anvil Lords titled with Artillery Battalions will find it hard to recruit Lords-Pilot outside their own household."
1D: 3 Artillery Companies, 1 Security Platoon, Iron Squad
2D: 6 Artillery Companies, 2 Security Platoon, Iron Platoon
3D: 9 Artillery Companies, 1 Security Company, Iron Platoon

Note: Assault Companies task-organize with Iron Plt (Drop), Anvil Inf Plt (Insertion-rides shuttles, no grav lift), Air Superiority Plt, Combat Engineer Squad (Insertion), and Insertion Platoon on one Transport
“Air Superiority: Anvil units fielding grav-armor designed primarily for anti-armor missions. A very specialized battalion, expensive to maintain and not suited for plundering one’s neighbors, hence found primarily on interior worlds.”
1D: 3 Air Superiority Companies (10 Anvil Attack Sleds each), 1 Security Platoon
2D: 6 Air Superiority Companies, 2 Security Platoon
3D: 9 Air Superiority Companies, 1 Security Company
“Security: Rare to find dedicated Security Battalions. Usually battalions will field a platoon or two of Security troops. But there are titles given out for Security battalions, and they have the added bonus of providing the lord with police officers in peacetime. Again, Anvil Lords titled with Security Battalions will find it hard to recruit Lords-Pilot outside their own household.”
1D: 3 Security Companies, 1 Iron Squad
2D: 6 Security Companies, 1 Iron Platoon
3D: 9 Security Companies, 1 Iron Platoon
“Combat Engineer: Another type usually found in small numbers organically within battalions. Titles for full Combat Engineering Battalions are primarily found in the interior.”
1D: 3 Combat Engineer Companies, 1 Security Platoon, 1 Iron Squad
2D: 6 Combat Engineer Companies, 2 Security Platoon, 1 Iron Platoon
3D: 9 Combat Engineer Companies, 1 Security Company, 1 Iron Platoon
That’s it for now, guess I need to work-up the companies (not in Sydney-detail, I ain’t that good!).
Wow, Lance.
Meanwhile, I’ve taken the figures above on how much Iron an Anvil Lord has (1D affiliation = 1 squad, 2D affiliation = 1 platoon, 3D affiliation = 1 company) and plugged it into a radical revision of what I’m now calling a “Battalion Headquarters & Headquarters Company,” which is
(a) the part of the old “Battalion Administrative and Support Element” that I think is worthy of dropping onto a planet in the first wave, namely the core battalion staff (which I’ve made much more robust, by the way), and
(b) some security elements (with a small “s” – they’re combat troops designed to protect the staff and if need be accompany the Anvil Lord into battle)
This is an “Anvil” HQ, that is, it’s designed for an Anvil Lord with just a 1D affiliation, so the Lord has just a single squad of Iron for bodyguards, plus a platoon of regular armored infantry in Anvil. I’ll make up a variant that replaces the Anvil troops with a full platoon of Iron, which will serve for Anvil Lords with both 2D affilations and 3D Affiliations – in the case of a 3D affiliation, you buy a whole company of Iron separate from the HQ company.
I’ll put it in the next post to minimize layout confusions. As always, I’m very interested in what comments folks have.

Sydney,
Yeah, an Anvil would need a hearty HQ, can’t force everything down to the company.
More yummy to&e goodness!
And this is the type of thing that would be most useful to a player who could care less about what a cavalry platoon has, but a collection of experts, “where’s my finance officer?,” would be a great benefit to an Anvil Lord!
You know, I’m so in awe of you two…
Chris
I suspect we both could use professional help . . . or more beer, whatever comes first!
I’ve given some more thought to templating Anvil Battalions by class, with a set number of “Line” companies and a ratio of “Support” platoons (companies when you get to three). What I did with 3, 6, and 9 Line companies I fear is too much. After thinking about it (there’s the beer again) I think a bit of reduction is required.
Anvil 1D would now be 2 Line companies and 3 support platoons (1 co equivalent), leaving us at Chris’ bottom number.
Anvil 2D: 4 Line cos and 6 support platoons (2 co equivalents)
Anvil 3D: 6 Line cos and 9 support platoons (3 co equivalents)
(Note I didn’t count Iron dets in here.)
Also, reading Chris’ notes more closely (did I mention I was a fanboy?, yeah okay) I think the ratios need to change:
Armor and Artillery plts 1/2 Line cos
Security, Cavalry, and Combat Engineer plts, 1/4 cos
This would rework the following battalions:
Anvil Battalion
1D: 2 Anvil Infantry Companies, Armored Platoon, Artillery Platoon, Iron Squad
2D: 4 Anvil Infantry Companies, 2 Armored Platoons, 2 Artillery Platoons, Cavalry Platoon, Security Platoon, Combat Engineer Platoon, Iron Platoon
3D: 6 Anvil Infantry Companies, Armored Company, Artillery Company, Cavalry Platoon, Security Platoon, Combat Engineer Platoon, Iron Company.
Infantry Battalion
1D: 2 Light Infantry Companies, Armored Platoon, Artillery Platoon, Iron Squad
2D: 4 Light Infantry Companies, Armored Platoon, 2 Artillery Platoons, Cavalry Platoon, Security Platoon, Combat Engineer Platoon, Iron Platoon
3D: 6 Light Infantry Companies, Artillery Company, 2 Armored Platoon, 2 Security Platoons, Cavalry Platoon, Combat Engineer Platoon, Iron Platoon.
Armored Battalion (very rare)
1D: 2 Armored Companies, Anvil Infantry Platoon, Artillery Platoon, Iron Squad
2D: 4 Armored Companies, 2 Cavalry Platoons, 2 Anvil Infantry Platoons, 2 Artillery Platoons, 1 Combat Engineer Platoon, 1 Security Platoon, Iron Platoon
3D: 6 Armored Companies, Anvil Infantry Company, Artillery Company, Cavalry Platoon, Security Platoon, Combat Engineer Platoon, Iron Company.
Cavalry Battalion (rare)
1D: 2 Cavalry Companies, Anvil Infantry Platoon, Artillery Platoon, Iron Squad
2D: 4 Cavalry Companies, 2 Anvil Infantry Platoons, 2 Artillery Platoons, Armored Platoon, Combat Engineer Platoon, Security Platoon, Iron Platoon
3D: 6 Cavalry Companies, Anvil Infantry Company, Artillery Company, Armored Platoon, Combat Engineer Platoon, Security Platoon, Iron Company.
Mechanized Battalion
1D: 1 Anvil Infantry Company, 1 Armored Company, Artillery Platoon, Cavalry Platoon, Combat Engineer Platoon, Iron Squad
2D: 2 Anvil Infantry Company, 2 Armored Company, 2 Artillery Platoon, 2 Cavalry Platoon, 2 Combat Engineer Platoons, Iron Platoon
3D: 3 Anvil Infantry Company, 3 Armored Company, 1 Artillery Battery, 1 Cavalry Company, 1 Combat Engineer Company, Iron Company
(Did I mention that this would be a very powerful battalion?)
The rest of the battalions would stay the same, more or less.
Again, my goal is to give a standard reference for a player who knows his Anvil Lord has a 1D Affiliation. He can then determine that this gives him so many companies and platoons which equals so many vehicles and squads, and of what types, he can call on. If he’s in to it, he could then mess around with Exponents, increasing some, decreasing others, swapping some for more Iron, etc., but doesn’t have too. If he wants more, well, he can join in me and Sydney’s to&e dementia!
Thanks. Lance and I are pretty good at the things we do (military technical stuff). We’re happy to make that our contribution to the awesome thing you’ve been doing (Iron Empires).
I’m still contemplating (a) Lance’s battalion organizations and (b) Battalion Headquarters organization, but my wife’s got a paper on Lacan due and I’ve been trying to help her with that. (Do letters reach their frickin’ senders or not, dammit?)
I trimmed the HQ organization slightly and made a version with Iron as the Anvil Lord’s personal guard:

What the hell is a laser rifle? Honestly, Syd!
“Assault laser,” right. Whoops.
ALso, are the carbines meant to be jack lasers? Or are they a designation for carbine assault guns?
